IMPORTANCE
OF VITAMINS IN OUR DAILY LIFE.
It
is extremely important to understand the importance of
Vitamins in our daily life.
Please
ready the following:
VITAMIN
B-1
Vitamin
B-1 (Thiamine) is essential for the metabolism
of carbohydrates into the simple sugar glucose. The
chemical process involves the combination of thiamine
with pyruvic acid to form a coenzyme, a substance that
when combined with other substances, forms an enzyme.
Enzymes are those all important proteins that speed up
chemical reactions in the body. Thiamine is also
important for the proper functioning of the nervous
system. In this instance, thiamine acts as a coenzyme in
the production of the neurotransmitter (chemical
messenger between nerve fibers) acetylcholine.
Thiamine
deficiency is rare but often occurs in alcoholics
because alcohol interferes with the absorption of
thiamine through the intestines. There are several
health problems associated with a deficiency of
thiamine. The first is beriberi, a
disease that is characterized by anemia,
paralysis, muscular atrophy and weakness, and spasms
in the muscles of the legs. Other disorders caused by
thiamine deficiency include Wernicke's
encephelopathy, which causes lack of
coordination, and Korsakoff's psychosis,
which effects short-term memory. The mouth can also be
affected by thiamine deficiency, increasing the
sensitivity of the teeth, cheeks and gums, as well as
"cracks" in the lips. Fortunately, these
conditions can be reversed with the addition of VITAMIN
B-1.
VITAMIN
B-2
Vitamin
B-2 (Riboflavin) is important in the breakdown
of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and, like
thiamine, it acts as a coenzyme in the process. It is
also significant in the maintenance of the skin and
mucous membranes, the cornea of the eye and for nerve
sheaths. Riboflavin also acts as a coenzyme for the
oxidation-reduction reactions throughout the body. Oxygen
reduction reactions involve the addition of
either oxygen or hydrogen to a substance. One important
consequence of this process is when it acts to inhibit
chemical reactions with oxygen or highly reactive free
radicals. These oxidation reactions can cause damage to
our cells.
VITAMIN
B-3
Vitamin
B-3 (Niacin) is known as nicotinic acid and
nicotinamide, and is needed for the metabolism of food,
the maintenance of healthy skin, nerves and the
gastrointestinal tract. Niacin is also used in those
all-important oxidation reduction reactions. A
deficiency of niacin causes the disease, pellagra. In
the past, this disease was often associated with the
very poor and was also a major cause of mental illness.
The symptoms of pellagra are sometimes referrred to as
"The 3 D's" -- Diarrhea, Dermattis, and
Dementia -- ultimately resulting in a fourth
"D", death.
VITAMIN
B-6
Vitamin
B-6 (Pyridoxine) is involved in more bodily
functions than almost any other single nutrient. It
affects both physical and mental health. Vitamin B-6
also aids in maintaining sodium and potassium balance,
and promotes red blood cell formation. It is required by
the nervous system, and is needed for normal brain
function and for the synthesis of the necleic acid RNA
and DNA which contain the genetic instructions for the
reproduction of all cells and normal cellular growth. It
activates many enzymes and aids in the absorption of
Vitamin B-12, in immune system function, and in antibody
production.
Vitamin
B-6 can play a role in cancer immunity and can aid in
the prevention of arteriosclerosis. It inhibits the
formation of a toxic chemical called homocy which
attacks the heart muscle and allows the deposition of
cholesterol around the heart muscle.
Vitamin
B-6 also acts as a mild diuretic, reducing the symptoms
of premenstrual syndrome, and it may be useful in
preventing oxalate kidney stones. It may also be helpful
in the treatment of allergies, arthritis, and asthma.
A
deficiency of Vitamin B-6 may be recognized by anemia,
convulsions, nausea, flaky skin, a sore tongue, and
vomiting. Other possible signs of deficiency include
acne, anorexia, arthritis, conjunctivitis, cracks or
sores on the mouth or lips, depression, dizziness,
fatigue, hyperirritability, impaired wound healing,
inflammation of the mouth and gums, learning
difficulties, weak memory, hearing problems, numbness,
oily facial skin, stunted growth, and tingling
sensations. Carpal tunnel syndrome has also been linked
to a deficiency of B vitamins.
VITAMIN
B-9
Vitamin
B-9 (Folic Acid) is considered to be a brain
food. Folic Acid is needed for energy production and the
formation of red blood cells. It also strengthens
immunity by aiding the formation of white blood cells.
It has been used in prevention and treatment of folic
acid anemia.
The
nutrient "Folic Acid" may also help depression
and anxiety.
Folic
Acid is also very important in pregnancy. It helps
regulate embryonic nerve cell formation, which is vital
for normal development. Studies have shown that a daily
intake of 400 micrograms of folic acid in early prenancy
may decrease the vast majority of neural tube defects
such as spina bifida. Many experts recommend that every
woman of childbearing age should take a folic acid
supplement daily. Folic Acid works best when combined
with Vitamin B-12 and Vitamin B-6.
VITAMIN
B-12
Vitamin
B-12 (Cyanocobalamin) is needed to prevent
anemia. It aids folic acid in regulating the formation
of red blood cells and helps in the utilization of iron.
This vitamin is required for proper digestion,
absorption of foods, the synthesis of protein, and the
metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. It also aids in
cell formation and cellular longevity.
Additionally,
Vitamin B-12 prevents nerve damage, maintains fertility,
and normal growth and development by maintaining the
fatty sheaths that cover and protect nerve endings.
A
Vitamin B-12 deficiency can be caused by malabsorption,
which is most common in elderly people and in those with
digestive disorders. Deficiency can cause abnormal gait,
chronic fatigue, constipation, depression, digestive
disorders, dizziness, drowsiness, enlargement of the
liver, eye disorder, hallucinations, headaches,
inflammation of the tongue, irritability, labored
breathing, moodiness, nervousness, neurological damage,
palpitations, ringing in the ears, and spinal cord
degeneration.
Strict
vegetarians must remember that they require Vitamin B-12
supplements as this vitamin is found almost exclusively
in animal tissues. People adopting a strictly vegetarian
diet may not see signs of the deficiency for some time.
The body can store up to 5 years worth of Vitamin B-12,
but signs will eventually develop.
It
is clear to see how important the "B" vitamins
may be to our general health and well being.
