The controller's circuitry may be sophisticated, but the concept is simple: each time you swing a club, the device recognizes your swing speed and measures your club head's directional impact. It then interprets the information, predicts the results, and translates it onscreen, so the ball flies with the same speed and direction it would in real life. The controller is also sensitive to different club head speeds, so it knows whether you're swinging a driver, a fairway wood, or a short iron.
In other words, you're rewarded (or penalized, depending on your skills) for whipping out a driver for a tee shot, a wedge for a short pitch, or a long iron for a punch shot.
